Celebrating motherhood has deep historical roots, reaching back to ancient times. While it has always been about honouring the nurturing and the sacrificial aspects of motherhood, its expression has varied with geography and time. The modern “holiday like” aspect of Mother’s Day is one of those expressions having emerged in the early 20th century in North America.
For family historians and genealogists tracing one’s female ancestry can be challenging. If one is fortunate, an image from 160 or so years ago might be available. But beyond that reach we can only imagine what ancestral mothers looked like.
In a spirit of reverence for mothers, the PEI Genealogical Society invites the public to attend a presentation on the collection and preservation of old photos, to be delivered by Claire Trainor, conservation technician from the PEI Public Archives and Records Office. Please join us on Saturday, May 9th, Mothers Day Eve, at 2:00 PM. Location: Beaconsfield’s Carriage House, 2 Kent Street, Charlottetown. There is lots of parking across the street in government parking lot.
Admission is free, and if you wish to share a favourite photo of an ancestral mother please bring one along!
