The License Cash Books of the Colonial Secretary of Prince Edward Island (1787-1805, 1812-1813)

This publication contains 877 names of early settlers who applied for and/or received licenses from the local government of Prince Edward Island. The Cash Books were kept by Robert Gray (Colonial Secretary) and they record the issuing of all manner of licenses. It was a source of revenue for the government and these books were the recording of these financial transactions. Included is a brief biography of Robert Gray, including a family genealogy. There is a wealth of information on marriage licenses, tavern licenses, licensing of ships (both owners and masters) and local militia information on appointments, where, when and for how long.
